Well, two projects down for my students, and two projects to go. We are now into the “make a difference!” portion of the semester, where students select a social issue that they care about or what to know more about and write 1) a literature review and 2) a proposal/call for change regarding a problem they identify with the issue in the literature review. Students are brainstorming their topics now, and I thought I’d share some of what they’ve come up with thus far:
- Effectiveness of cochlear implants in deaf children
- Trends in genetically modified food research (last 3 years or so)
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment in the military
As always, not everyone did a great job brainstorming and narrowing from a broad topic (ie. deaf community) to a narrow topic (effectiveness of cochlear implants in deaf children), but I think the ones I’ve listed here have potential for both identifying a problem in the literature review and coming up with a great proposal for change (the ultimate rhetorical purpose: inciting action in your readership) for the final project.
